The Re-Seeding the NFL Playoffs Debate… A Wild Card Winner Is The First Loser

December 22, 2010

Read the opposing argument from Optimist Prime.

Today’s debate, introduced to us by Sports Geek, has seemingly picked up a lot of steam in the past couple of weeks. Many columnists, such as Sports Illustrated writer Peter King (a favorite of mine), have written about the absurdity of, in essence, guaranteeing a home game to all division winners… no matter what the record is of the division winner or the Wild-Card winners. This has all come to the forefront thanks to the absolutely dreadful NFC West, where it is now quite possible that the division winner (St. Louis, Seattle, or yes, even San Francisco) could win the division title with a 7-9 record and host a first round playoff game. Meanwhile, poor little New Orleans is staring at the likelihood of being a double digit winner and having to go on the road for the first round. Is this right? Why, yes, it is!

It’s really hard to argue anything in regards to the 2010 NFC West, so I won’t even try. It’s bad. Really, really bad. But let’s not rewrite history and change the playoff format due to a bad division in one season. Would we even be having this debate if the Rams or the Seahawks were sitting at 8-6 tight now? Highly doubtful .

Let’s go back to 2008, just two short years ago, when both the Arizona Cardinals and the San Diego Chargers were division winners with records of 9-7 and 8-8, respectively. The Cardinals hosted an 11-5 Atlanta Falcons team in the first round of the playoffs. In a very entertaining game, the Cardinals eventually won 30-24. What did they do the next two weeks? They won… and after a sensational run and catch by Larry Fitzgerald in Super Bowl XLIII, we all thought the Cardinals had won the Super Bowl. But Santonio Holmes, in his pre-substance abuse days, had other ideas and created a Super Bowl memory with his catch in the corner of the end zone. That Cardinals team, despite winning a bad division with a 9-7 record, made it to the Super Bowl and nearly won the thing.

That same season the Chargers won the AFC West by going 8-8 and welcomed the mighty Indianapolis Colts to San Diego. The Colts entered the playoffs with a 12-4 record and were coming in with a nine game winning streak. In theory, the Colts should have hosted, right? Well, Darren Sproles and his legs had other ideas as he helped the Chargers win in overtime 23-17.

The bottom line is that a mediocre record as a division winner doesn’t guarantee a loss in the first round. There’s no guarantee that the Saints will beat the Rams or Seahawks, if that’s the matchup that takes place. If the Saints didn’t want to go on the road the first round, then they should have beaten Atlanta on their home turf. They shouldn’t have lost to Max Hall and his Arizona Cardinals, which is a game that still remains a head scratcher. They shouldn’t have lost to Colt McCoy and the Browns. Meanwhile, one of these teams in the West is going to win the division. They don’t make the schedule. They just go out and play. Seattle actually has a win in Chicago this season.

I see no reason to punish a division winner for achieving its goal of actually winning its division. The Wild Card winner doesn’t get home field in baseball. Why should it get a home game in the NFL? If you aren’t going to reward the division winners, then why even have divisions at all? Why don’t you just go ahead and have two gigantic 16 team conferences and have the six best records in each conference go to the playoffs? Don’t like that idea? Well, just leave it as it is then!

The Time To Panic Debate… The Vikings Ship Is Still Sinking

October 17, 2010

Read the opposing argument from Babe Ruthless.

I was looking forward to today’s debate all weekend long. Both teams are two high profile teams, and since both the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings were matched up in a late afternoon national broadcast yesterday, I knew I’d get a chance to sit down in my recliner and soak it all in. Being the lazy man that I tend to be on Fall weekends, that’s exactly what I did. Thanks to a couple of Tony Romo interceptions and a handful of Cowboy penalties, the Vikings were able to escape with a much needed victory. That victory left the Vikings at a much more manageable 2-3 and within striking distance of the vulnerable Bears in the NFC North. But, a victory does not mean all is well in the Twin Cities.

First, let’s look at yesterday’s game. By no means did the Vikings dominate the game. Hardly. A quick look at the box score shows quite the opposite. The Vikings had 188 total yards, which included a measly 118 passing yards from Brett Favre. The Cowboys, in contrast, had 314 total yards, and seemed to be able to move the ball a lot easier than the Vikings. If it wasn’t for Percy Harvin’s 95 yard kickoff return to open the second half the outcome of the game could have been flipped as the three other scoring drives by the Vikings totaled an embarrassing 75 yards! Ouch! Obvious questions remain.

New acquisition Randy Moss was supposed to jump start the Viking offense, but that really hasn’t happened yet. He hasn’t been a distraction yet, either. In fact, both Favre and head coach Brad Childress credit Moss for firing the team up at the half. But Moss really hasn’t been the spark to the offense on the field. In two games he has nine catches for 136 yards. Expectations are admittedly high for Moss, but I don’t think nine catches over two games meets those expectations.

Then there’s our newest text message fanatic, Mr. Favre. For those of us who have watched the NFL for the past eighteen years we have gotten used to #4 riding in his white stallion and saving the day for his team. He’s not that guy anymore. And to be perfectly fair, we shouldn’t expect him to be. What he accomplished last season at age 40 was amazing. What he is doing this season at 41 is realistic. Last season we often heard, “How did he make that throw?” This season we are hearing, “Brett would like to have that one back.” I heard that more than once from commentator Troy Aikman. That’s not to say that Favre doesn’t still have it in him. He can still play. He’s just not an All-Pro quarterback anymore. Not to mention the fact that he has been battling elbow tendinitis and also has ongoing off-the-field distractions.

The Vikings, however, are built to win in 2010. They traded for Moss to win in 2010. They talked Favre out of retirement… AGAIN… to win in 2010. And if you look behind Favre on the quarterback depth chart, quarterbacks number two and three bring out the names Tavaris Jackson and Joe Webb (who?). At least Dallas has Jon Kitna! Can the Vikings win this season with those guys if Favre goes down with injury (entirely possible)? Are those guys capable of leading the team in the future? Hahahahahaha!!!

Both the Cowboys and Vikings have uphill battles to make the playoffs in 2010. With both being 2009 division champions, they have extremely difficult schedules the rest of the way. But the Vikings have age going against them. They HAVE to win now and that’s why there is more panic in the Twin Cities.

The Best Remaining NFL Game of the Season Debate – Yet Another NFC East Showdown

December 25, 2009

Read the arguments from Bleacher Fan and Sports Geek.

First off, Merry Christmas to everyone!!! On behalf of the four of us, I sincerely wish a Merry Christmas to you and yours this holiday season! I hope you enjoy spending time with your loved ones! I’m also glad you’ve chosen to give us a look today as we wrap up yet another week of debates.

As you probably know, we usually highlight the game of the weekend on Friday. Since the NFL regular season is winding down, we have decided to pick out the best game of the last two weeks of the season. There are a handful of games that have playoff implications this weekend, and there will be some huge games next week in Week 17 depending on what happens this week. But to me, there is no question about what the biggest game is the rest of the way this regular season and that is yet ANOTHER NFC East showdown. This one involves the Philadelphia Eagles making a trip down to Big D to take on the Dallas Cowboys.

Some of you may remember the Eagles absolutely throttling the Cowboys 44-6 in Week 17 last season in a game that put the Eagles in the playoffs and the Cowboys back in the Lonestar State with no playoff berth in hand. I certainly remember it because I heckled my brother about it for weeks, since he is a big Cowboys fan. This season, depending on what happens in Week 16, the stakes could be just as high.

Philadelphia clinched a playoff spot with its victory over the 49ers last week. The Cowboys, despite an impressive win over the previously undefeated Saints last week, still have work to do to clinch a playoff spot. The ‘Boys are currently tied with the Green Bay Packers at 9-5, with the New York Giants sitting a game back at 8-6. Both the Packers and Giants have tiebreakers over the Cowboys. Even if the Cowboys win in Washington Sunday night, there is a good chance, depending on what the Giants do, that they will have to defeat the Eagles to make the playoffs. Contrarily, there is a chance the Cowboys can still win the division with a victory over the Eagles.

If the Cowboys do not make the playoffs, it is pretty safe to assume that Wade Phillips will join millions of Americans on the unemployment line. What a complete embarrassment that would be for Jerry Jones. But hey, look at the bright side, Jerry! At least you can go ahead and start working on getting the stadium ready for the NBA All-Star Game. You have already been telling anyone that listens that you want at least 100,000 people in Cowboys Stadium! A loss will give you more time to get ready!

There are several different scenarios right now as far as who can make the playoffs and what it will take for that to happen, but that is what makes the NFL great. And that is what makes this a huge game, regardless of what happens this weekend.
