The Best Game of THIS Weekend Debate… Final Hurdle Before the BCS National Championship

November 23, 2010

Read the opposing arguments from Babe Ruthless and Sports Geek.

Oregon head coach Chip Kelly is used to being in the spotlight.

His first ever game as head coach resulted in a post game brawl where his star running back, LeGarrette Blount, sluged Boise State linebacker Byron Hout resulting in Blount’s suspension for most of the season. Still, without Blount in the backfield, Kelly led his team to a Pac-10 championship, and a Rose Bowl appearance, for the first time in nearly a decade.

Then, just months later, Kelly’s star quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli, was charged with burglary, and later with possession of marijuana and driving infractions, which resulted in his kicking the Heisman candidate off his team.

Once more coach Kelly’s Ducks, who were 2010 national championship contenders at the time of Masoli’s dismissal., were without a star talent because of stupid, irresponsible actions. And, once more, Kelly rose to the challenge. After kicking Masoli off the team, the Ducks entered the 2010 season with moderately dampened expectations, but they did not stay dampened for long.

Now, with only two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Ducks not sit only atop the Pac-10 Conference, but thanks to an undefeated record they sit as the top ranked team in every major poll, including the BCS standings. Should Oregon finish the season in that spot, Coach Kelly, in only his second season at the helm, will have led the Oregon Ducks to their first ever national championship game.

Oregon has rolled over every opponent it faced in impressive fashion, including a 52-31 victory over Stanford, ranked ninth in the nation at the time. They have put up 504 points this season, and allowed only 172 to opponents. Oregon has risen to every challenge, and now have only one legitimate obstacle standing in the way of championship dreams – the Arizona Wildcats.

Yes, the Oregon State Beavers always present a challenge in the annual Civil War rivalry game. But this season all appearances are that the Beavers will be outclassed by the faster, more talented Ducks. If the Ducks do survive their matchup against the Arizona Wildcats, then beating the Beavers will be a mere formality.

The question is – can the Wildcats REALLY challenge the Ducks? In a short answer, yes (but it won’t be easy).

Arizona will enter Autzen Stadium ranked 21st in the BCS. They have already beaten top-ten ranked Iowa, and boast one of the best passing offenses in the country. Junior quarterback Nick Foles is averaging 275.1 yards per game, and has 13 passing TDs compared to only six interceptions. Foles’ primary target, Juron Criner, is currently one of the ten best receivers in the country, averaging 98.2 receiving yards per game.

But passing alone will not beat the Ducks.

The most important battle for the Wildcats in this game will be in figuring out how to stop the Ducks from scoring. Short of faking injuries to slow down the Ducks’ high-octane offense, that may not be possible as the Ducks are the only team in the country to AVERAGE more than 50 points per game. Running back LaMichael James has already racked up over 1,400 rushing yards and 17 TDs for Oregon, and quarterback Darron Thomas has been good for another 23 TDs in the air, 11 of which have gone to receiver Jeff Maehl.

The Wildcats are not coming into this game unprepared, or untested, though. The defense has allowed only 18.1 points per game (one of the best averages in the country), and two of the team’s three losses this season are by a combined five points. Unfortunately for Arizona, run defense has been a weakness lately, having given up 217 yards and 205 yards on the ground in losing efforts over the last two weeks against Stanford and Southern Cal, respectively.

Prior to those two losses, however, the Wildcat defense allowed only 88.9 yards per game on the ground, and if they can return to that earlier form they will have a very real opportunity to play spoiler to Oregon’s BCS hopes. If not, the Ducks can pack their bags, because they are as good as guaranteed an invitation to Phoenix on January 10th.

The Best BCS Bowl Debate – Do You Smell The Roses?

December 21, 2009

Read the arguments from Sports Geek and Bleacher Fan.

The writers here at The Sports Debates had a relatively interesting discussion behind the scenes concerning this debate. We all have reservations about the teams that are playing in the games we are arguing in favor of. Being from the South, it is not very often that you will see me arguing for a game involving teams from the Pac-10. But I am all about watching the best game, and after looking at the five BCS games, I have come to the conclusion that the Rose Bowl is the BEST BCS game.

Ohio State, for all the criticism it takes from Loyal Homer behind closed doors for its inability to win the big game, closes out the decade as one of college football’s top programs. I give credit for that. Ohio State has won six Big Ten titles this decade, and the appearance in the Granddaddy of Them All will be their fifth consecutive BCS appearance. It looked like this season’s team would not make it to a BCS game, as they had two losses by midseason. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor and head coach Jim Tressel have been fighting off critics all season. The criticism reached such a fever pitch that The Sports Debates actually had a debate on the use of Pryor earlier this year. I have never been one to just love the Ohio State brand of football, and yet, after late wins over Penn State and Iowa, here they are again! A solid defense and an opportunistic offense behind a playmaking quarterback is a recipe for a ten win season. A win over the Ducks locks up a top ten finish… AGAIN… and really raises expectations for the 2010 season.

Meanwhile, the Ducks also took the scenic route to Pasadena. We all remember the LeGarrette Blount incident in the first game of the season. I remember watching that game and thinking, “This team is terrible.” But to head coach Chip Kelly’s credit – someone who deserves some coach of the year consideration – the team righted the ship, and here they are! Highlights of the season include an absolute whipping of USC and a thrilling win over rival Oregon State in the Civil War. To people on the East coast, you might not be familiar with Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, but he is the real deal. I admit I was late on his bandwagon, but I watched him pick apart Southern Cal to the tune of nearly 400 yards. That game convinced me of his talent. Somewhat quietly, I think, he threw for over 2,000 yards and ran for over 650 yards with a combined 27 touchdowns. Assuming he comes back, he could be mentioned as a preseason Heisman Trophy contender next season. It will be interesting to see how he does against a tough Buckeye defense.

The Buckeyes against the Ducks! Is it the sexy, glamorous matchup that fans outside of these two fan bases want to see? Probably not! But it is a game involving two teams who play very different styles of football. It is an opportunity for both teams to try to get some national respect. And after all, it is the Rose Bowl!

The Best Game of THIS Weekend Debate – Ducks Seek Redemption Against the Men of Troy

October 30, 2009

Read Loyal Homer’s argument and Bleacher Fan’s argument for which games they believe are the best of the upcoming weekend.

The best game of THIS weekend happens when #4 Southern Cal visits #10 Oregon in Eugene this Saturday night.

In the modern era of college football, where large scale stadium expansions are happening with increasing frequency, it is a combination of refreshing and surprising that Oregon’s Autzen Stadium is such a feared place to play. It is difficult to comprehend how a crowd of just 54,000 (small by today’s standards) – a crowd that includes some fans who actually valet park their bicycles – was listed as one of ESPN’s Top 10 Intimidating Stadiums.

The small but spirited stadium “welcomes” Southern Cal Saturday night with, hopefully, something less than a punch in the face.

Oregon, at times this season, appears to have as many personalities as it does jersey combinations. The team has improved after the opening season loss to Boise State on the road. The losing team’s personality appears to have been exchanged for a renewed, confident bunch led by a dynamic and talented Jeremiah Masoli under center. Masoli’s passing numbers are understated thus far in 2009 having thrown just five touchdowns against two interceptions. Fortunately Oregon is now a run first team with running back LaMichael James taking over for the displaced and suspended LaGarrette Blount. James has six touchdowns on the season and averages nearly seven yards per carry. Masoli does a healthy share of damage on the ground, too, with seven touchdowns.

Another strange personality trait Oregon has adopted this season is an uncharacteristically stout defense. Most of the prognosticators and predictors pay a great deal of attention to the offense of Oregon. But, it is the team’s defense this season that sets it apart from the other contenders in the PAC-10. While USC is usually atop the league in team defense, and the team is again this season, Oregon is a rarified second. And, Oregon actually leads the PAC-10 in pass defense thanks in large part to ten team interceptions – including two that were returned for scores.

But, that Southern Cal team is always tough. The team is well-coached and is fighting for a potential shot at the BCS national title game. Alabama and Florida will eliminate each other from contention, and Texas could lose this weekend to Oklahoma State. If USC wins, the team has a legitimate hold on a potential championship spot.

But, it is easy to get carried away when it comes to USC. Remember Mark Sanchez? Before he was an underwear model (and I think he is also the New York Jets quarterback), he was a wide-eyed sophomore quarterback at Southern Cal about to make his third start at Oregon. He threw two passes to the ugly green shirts and the Trojans lost the game 24-17.

A different year but similar circumstance exists now. Matt Barkley, the young but improving true freshman quarterback for the Trojans, has the opportunity to do what his very talented predecessors could not at his age and stage – beat Oregon on the road.

Southern Cal is capable of winning this game, but Oregon needs it. Oregon is a team still desperate to prove it belongs in the national conversation after a disappointing start to the season. USC is a team desperate to show it deserves an opportunity to play for the national title game. The matched talent and desperation makes USC-Oregon the best game of THIS weekend.
